STEM Activity: What Makes A Family?

What Makes A Family?: Stuart Little Family Collage Project

Stuart Little is a mouse who acts like a human and wants to be treated that way. He is viewed as a son and a brother by his family, the Littles, who do not change the way they treat him because he is different from them.

Many families today are blended in some way.  Often, households include grandparents, cousins or other family members.  As part of the One School One Book program, we invite all Coltrane-Webb families to create a collage with pictures and items representing what ‘family’ means to them.  In order to do this, families need to cut out a heart of any size and put their last name in the center.  Items that can be placed onto the heart might be personal photographs or drawings or even actual items that represent something your family likes to do together, such as a puzzle piece to show that you like playing games together, or a ticket from a place that you went to and enjoyed.

These collages can be completed and brought to school anytime during the One School One Book program, which ends on Tuesday, April 15th.  They may also be turned in at STEM Night. We will make a large display of our hearts together demonstrating that we are a school community even though we represent diverse families and cultures. Even though we will return the heart collages to families, please do not put anything of value on it.

Thank you so much for participating in this activity and for supporting the One School One Book program.
